How B2B Net Rates Work — A Guide for New Travel Agents

If you're newer to selling international destinations, "net rate" is a term you'll hear constantly — and understanding exactly how it works is the difference between pricing your Thailand packages profitably and leaving money on the table.

What a net rate actually means

A net rate is the direct cost price a DMC charges you as a travel agent — hotels, transfers, tours, and any other component — with no retail markup or commission already built in. You then add your own margin on top and sell to your client at whatever final price you choose. The DMC never sees or influences your retail price.

Why this matters more than it might seem

Some companies calling themselves a "Thailand DMC" are actually intermediaries reselling another operator's rates, with their own margin already added before it reaches you. When that happens, your margin is squeezed before you've even built in your own — and you have less room to be competitive. A genuine net-rate DMC removes that hidden layer entirely.

How to build your margin correctly

  • Start with the net rate for each component (hotel, transfers, tours)
  • Add your margin as a percentage or flat markup — most agents in the Thailand segment work with 10–20% depending on the package and client relationship
  • Bundle components into one clean package price for your client rather than itemizing every markup
  • Factor in your own overhead (staff time, payment processing, client service) when deciding your margin — net rate is your cost, not your final answer

A note on trust

Ask any DMC directly whether they sell to consumers as well as agents. If they do, there's an inherent conflict — they may be tempted to undercut you directly, or your client could stumble onto public retail pricing and question your markup. A trade-only DMC has no such conflict, since your client relationship is protected by design.
